A Schedule That Starts and Ends With the NFC East

There isn’t much time for Harbaugh to ease into his new job. His first Giants game comes against Dallas on Sunday Night Football, and three weeks later New York begins the divisional portion of its schedule at Washington. The Giants then play Philadelphia immediately after their Week 8 bye.

The ending may matter even more. New York visits Dallas in Week 17 and hosts Philadelphia in Week 18. If the Giants make enough progress to enter January with something meaningful at stake, they’ll get opportunities to settle it directly against two of the teams their fans most want to beat.

The first round of the 2026 draft says quite a bit about how New York sees the roster. The Giants selected Ohio State’s Arvell Reese fifth overall and Miami offensive lineman Francis Mauigoa tenth. Harbaugh has said Reese will begin at inside linebacker next to Tremaine Edmunds, while Mauigoa is starting his NFL career at guard.

Those aren’t cosmetic additions. They’re investments directly through the middle of the offense and defense. New York then used its second-round selection on cornerback Colton Hood and traded into the third round for receiver Malachi Fields. Has New York Finally Found Its Quarterback?

This question has followed the Giants for years. Now, for the first time in a while, there’s a young quarterback who has given New York a legitimate reason to believe the answer could be yes. Jaxson Dart started 12 games as a rookie in 2025. He completed 216 of 339 passes for 2,272 yards, 15 touchdowns and only five interceptions. Dart also added 487 rushing yards and nine touchdowns, making his mobility a significant part of what he brought to the offense. Those numbers don’t mean the quarterback question is permanently solved. They do mean Dart did enough as a rookie to change the conversation.

The 2026 coaching change could help determine what happens next. Harbaugh hired Matt Nagy as offensive coordinator, while former Bengals offensive coordinator and Titans head coach Brian Callahan serves as passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach. The Giants have also brought Greg Roman onto the offensive staff, creating a mix of influences around the second-year quarterback.

Brian Burns was already a major problem for opposing offenses in 2025, finishing with 16.5 sacks. Abdul Carter, the third overall selection in the 2025 draft, now enters his second season. New York then added Reese fifth overall in 2026 and plans to use his versatility throughout the front seven. Harbaugh described a defense where Reese could line up next to Tremaine Edmunds, attack different gaps, move toward the edge and be used alongside Carter, Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux in pressure packages. That’s a lot of flexibility for new defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson to work with.

New York also used pick No. 37 on cornerback Colton Hood, giving the secondary another young player to develop. This is where the Giants’ history becomes interesting without needing to imitate it. Nobody needs to call this the next Big Blue Wrecking Crew. That’s an impossible and unnecessary standard. But successful Giants teams have often had defenses capable of changing games, and the current roster is beginning to accumulate the kind of front-seven talent that could become an identity.

If Dart makes the expected Year 2 progress while the defense develops faster than anticipated, New York’s path out of the bottom of the NFC East becomes much easier to imagine.

That’s what makes this season feel different from another generic rebuild. The Giants finished 4-13 last year, so there is still a long distance between having promising pieces and becoming a contender. But Dart’s rookie season gave New York something to build around, and two top-10 draft selections gave the new coaching staff significant reinforcements immediately.

The 1986 Giants weren’t remembered because they successfully recreated an earlier championship team. Neither were the 2007 Giants. They became the teams later generations wanted to remember. New York doesn’t need its old Giants back. It needs the next great Giants team to finally start taking shape.
